Our Journey – The Beginning…

The idea for Enriched Earth Ecovillage came about in the summer of 2014 when founder John-Paul Patton was doing a 49 day coastal tour of Ireland, starting in Belfast. While travelling the Wild Atlantic Way, he was inspired by a friend who had their own small-holding and then later in the journey met other friends seeking to do the same. They decided to join forces and spoke to others who were interested and the vision and concept grew from there. It was whilst reading around on the subject that John-Paul first heard of the concept of an Ecovillage through discovering Lammas Ecovillage in Wales. He realised that this was exactly the kind of project that Enriched Earth was evolving into!

The stage that we are at now is the planning stage, scoping out potential locations and considering what type of sustainable buildings we would like to live in. This beautiful and inspiring low-impact house was originally designed and built by Simon Dale of Lammas Ecovillage. You can read more about him and how he built this house here:

We have a lot of work ahead of us including attracting more Aspiring Residents and Investors, researching the best in ecological building practices, writing a business plan, considering a range of sustainable social enterprises, considering grant funding options and much, much more. If you are inspired by our blogs, our journey and what we do, please don’t hesitate to contact us. If you would like to invest in or donate to our project, we would love to talk to you. We need all the support we can get from everyone who cares about seeing an Educational Ecovillage in Northern Ireland.  So join with us in our journey, as we share each step of this adventure over the coming months and years. Onwards!

Be part of the solution…

(edited slightly for new website from original blog post in which we were The Cauldron Community Educational Ecovillage and initially considering West Mayo as a target area).

Really excited to see this in Ireland – I am very interested in the co/ housing movement but didn’t think it was possible in Ireland. Upon reading my first instinct was my inner voice saying yeah we’re moving . On the next 2-3 years we will have more geographical mobility so please keep me updated because I am conduct the the planning needs to start much earlier.
